“After an extensive search last fall, we chose Hudson Woodworking & Restoration to restore four pieces: a Stickley dining room table, a beloved rocking chair, an antique secretary, and an antique dresser. We knew right from the start that the care we took to find the right company had been worthwhile. In every email and phone call, Rebekka Hudson was courteous and helpful. When Joseph and Rebekka came to the house to give us an estimate, we were impressed by Joe, too. He knows an amazing amount about wood and fine furniture, and he takes great pride and pleasure in his work. Joe told us that he would refinish our dining room table right away, and he kept his word, even at a busy time in his work schedule. Within a few weeks, we had our refinished table back in our dining room, looking lovely again. The original finish had been damaged, so Joe stripped it away, replaced it, and educated us about caring for the finish so that it won’t be damaged again. Two of the remaining pieces required more extensive work. The dresser needed to be taken apart, repaired piece by piece, reassembled, and refinished. The secretary, with its interior cubbyholes and drawers and its exterior decorative detail, also required expert attention. We knew that Joe would do an excellent job, and we also knew that great work takes time, particularly when very old pieces are involved. Given all that had to be done, we thought four months was a perfectly reasonable time to wait for these pieces to be delivered. The dresser and especially the secretary look beautiful and now function perfectly. We’re still at the point where we see them and marvel at their transformation And what about the rocker? It was not an antique or an example of contemporary fine furniture. It was just a rocker we loved and that needed refinishing. Joe darkened the finished so that it matched the look of the other pieces in my study, and it looks great–far better than it did originally! And it’s still the most comfortable chair we’ve ever owned. The only thing we’re sad about is that we have no more furniture that needs Joe’s and Rebekka’s attention. We so enjoyed meeting them, and we were glad to see them whenever they picked up or dropped off our furniture. We feel lucky that we found them, and we’re delighted with Joe’s craftsmanship. We cannot recommend Hudson Woodworking & Restoration highly enough.” –Susan M. Fairfax, VA

Danish Modern B & A

Complete re-finish of a Danish modern dining room set “FRICKIN amazing. I made a number of calls to others and they didn’t seem interested in the job or, alternatively, my sense was they didn’t know what they were doing. I call Hudson and they came out in a pickup truck after we’d swapped some emails and got an estimate based on photos. They confirmed estimate and I was still a bit concerned w/the pickup truck as opposed to a covered van. When it was time for the table to be delivered they told me they’d found a flaw and wanted to keep it 24 hours to correct it. I said sure and they brought it out today. Everything was padded and wrapped and came in without any flaws at all. I was blown away by how good the set looked–and it was in pretty bad shape when it went out w/loose chairs, cane that was coming out and a lot of knicks and gouges. The set now looks better than what I remembered looking like when I was a kid–and that table was my mother’s pride and joy. I don’t have any plans for anything else to be redone soon but if I ever need anything w/furniture repair I know exactly where to go.” –Paul C. Alexandria, VA

armoireB&A

“Hudson’s did repairs, reinforcing and painting/refinishing on a piece of furniture (large armoire) purchased at an upscale consignment store. It was an incredible experience. Joe and Rebekka are both amazing and I’m happy I’ve had the opportunity to work with them. I found Hudson’s on Angie’s list and contacted them because they had good reviews and they were nearby. When I called them, they were apparently on vacation and still answered their phone. They were informative, professional and very pleasant to talk to…even telling me to send in photos of the piece I needed work on to get a quick approximate estimate (while they were on vacation). I sent them the photo of my armoire and received a response back very quickly. They explained that since I lived within a 10 mile radius, they would pick up and deliver free of charge, amazing!!! They scheduled a pick up date at my convenience and they arrived right on time. We discussed the piece and what my expectations were then they firmed up the estimate (which was exactly what they originally estimated) and took the piece. They estimated a completion date which they met then called to schedule a delivery of the completed piece. I had high expectations which were far exceeded. The armoire originally had a balance issue from a very heavy mirror, a door that didn’t open and close properly, a crack where the door attached to the side, etc. and I wanted it repaired then painted/refinished to match another piece in our bedroom….all were done in a timely, very professional and cost effective manner, I couldn’t be happier. When they delivered the armoire, they carried it up the stairs, cleaned the mirror, and asked if there was anything else i needed help with. I paid them in full upon delivery and they have since followed up to ensure I am still happy. Their responsiveness, customer service, workmanship and reasonable prices set them apart from many other similar companies that I’ve used in the past. I will use them again with anything I have that fits within their expertise and I’ve suggested them to all of my friends.” –Michelle A. Centreville, VA

Painted Rocking Chair (800x450)

“I took to Hudson Woodworking and Restoration a thirty year old rickety oak rocker made in Tennessee that had seen better days and got back from them a beautiful dark oak rocker with rush seating….. a rocker that will become a family heirloom. It is absolutely beautiful! If I didn’t know better, I’d say that someone had pulled a switcheroo!! To be honest, I really didn’t think that Joe could save this piece. It had been painted twice…first in red then in white. The red paint had been put on the raw wood so it had really gotten down into the grain making it very difficult to get out…..I know because I tried to refinish it myself at one point. The rush seating was gone as the rocker had been sitting outside with no finish on the rush so it had become moldy and had been removed. The rungs that the rush had been attached to were splintered and beyond saving. It was in terrible condition. But he was able to take it apart, remove the red paint, replace the rungs and put it all back together – better than the original!!” –Patty B. Herndon, VA

Mid Century Modern Dresser B & A

“After much deliberation, and after contacting several different companies, decided to go with Hudson Woodworking to refinish the bureau and chest of drawers my parents had bought in Houston, Texas in 1953. The nightstand and full size headboard were long gone but these two pieces remained. When they moved to Florida in the mid 90’s my father had them painted white (ouch!) and replaced the original hardware (another ouch). I wanted them restored to their natural state, which I remember being a blonde wood. The original hardware was brass pulls, I opted for black because I have an old 50’s desk with original black hardware… Communication with Rebekka and Joe was primarily via email which works well for me. I sent pictures of the furniture to them and they gave me an estimate. I was going to try to deliver the furniture myself, as I am a wee bit out of their free delivery area, but decided against it and met them when they arrived to pick it up. They are a very nice couple, and I had no regrets as I watched them drive away with my stuff! I purchased the pulls online and had them delivered directly to their shop. They picked up the furniture the end of April and delivered it June 13th. The end product is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. If I can figure out how to include before and after pictures I will do so, and I will not hesitate to use them again as I have several other pieces from the 50’s which need some TLC!” –Paula K. “Table finish is fabulous – somehow I squirted water from faucet extension in kitchen and discovered it neatly beaded up on the table top hours later, and it just wiped up with the cloth you left me! Can’t tell you how much I love the chairs!!  The job you did on them is exquisite–the wood grain shows through just enough and the color is perfect.  Their curviness is just what was needed to offset the extremely linear design of the dining room pieces you had restored earlier. Your recognizing that their legs and feet matched what I have and offering them to me was thoughtful, as well as indicative of the aesthetic sense that informs your work….you have done the most beautiful restoring and refinishing I have ever seen.  I didn’t feel comfortable giving things a close examination while you were here, but have been marveling at these pieces ever since!  I didn’t go into it, but in the past, people in my family have restored some pretty fabulous antiques and spent a pretty penny for some big names, so I’ve seen lots of this kind of work.  But I’ve never seen such gorgeous finishes, silky smooth and almost supple–really beautiful!” ”-Ann G. Centreville, VA

antique rocker b & a

“Hudson Woodworking and Restoration completely refinished and restored a family rocking chair. It was in such bad shape we couldn’t even tell what kind of wood it was. Joe completely took it apart, re-glued and fully restored the chair. It ended up it was cherry and now looks beautiful. My husband discovered a very old family rocking chair (probably early 1900’s) at a friend’s house outside of Pittsburgh. It was under all kinds of junk. He brought it back and wanted it restored. We got the names of three restoration companies close by off the internet and never went any further than Joe and Rebekka Hudson, our first stop! They are a young couple and very accommodating. They came in from their home on a Sat. afternoon to meet us. While we were there they showed us around the shop. Joe is truly an artist and the work he does is awesome. He is also a perfectionist and you can see that in his work. They gave us an estimate and confirmed via email. The chair was ready earlier than we expected – less than a week. We were shocked when we went to get the chair we really would not have recognized it. We were surprised to find out it was cherry. Joe and Rebekka said once we got the seat reupholstered to bring everything back and they would attach the seat to the chair at no extra cost. We were lucky enough to see the 1869 Wine Press Joe had restored. The Hudson’s are a delightful talented couple and we endorse Hudson Woodworking and Restoration 100%.” –Pat A., Chantilly, VA

Antique Table B&A

“We inherited a dining table with three leaves and eight chairs from my husband’s grandmother. It was difficult to tell what type of wood it was because the finish covered the grain. Joe suggested we take it to his shop and he would try and determine what it was made of. We took a chair and he couldn’t tell exactly what it was without stripping it but he could tell it was solid wood. Knowing that, we decided it was worth it to invest in the refinishing process. The quote was a little higher than others I had received but I liked his knowledge of the wood and his willingness to take the time to help us assess exactly what we had. Once he had it stripped he could tell it was maple. At that point we went back to the shop to decide what color stain we wanted. Again, he was very patient helping us make our selection. Rebekka kept in touch via email about pickup and delivery dates. She responded quickly to both email and phone calls and we appreciated the open communication. When they delivered the table and chairs the transformation was astounding. The wood grain is now visible and the finish is beautiful. It looks much better than it did originally. This will be a treasured heirloom for many, many years to come. Joe repaired a broken scroll on one of the feet and we can’t tell which one it was. His workmanship was outstanding. Our daughter has the sideboard that goes with the table and someday we’ll have him refinish it to match the table. There is no doubt that Hudson Woodworking and Restoration will be our “go to” company! Thank you Joe and Rebekka.” –Jo Ann P. Burke, VA

Painted Wardrobe B & A

“This is the second time I’ve used Hudson Woodworking. I was so pleased with the work they did on 3 antique chairs, I gave them my mother’s armoire to refinish. My mother had bought the armoire in the 1970’s at a garage sale in Cincinnati for $20. It was painted then, and my mother added to the coats of paint over the years with her changing decor. I had always loved the piece and when I inherited it, I wanted it stripped. I was so surprised when it turned out to be walnut underneath four coats of paint. Joe did such a great job refinishing it. Such a wonderful tribute to my mother and something that I’ll cherish forever. When Joe and Rebekka delivered the armoire, they left with an antique rocker. Can’t wait to see how that turns out!” –Amy L. Vienna, VA

“Hudson Woodworking and Restoration repaired and restored several pieces for me including a scratched farm house table; antique chest of drawers and dressing table; an antique leather drum table and a damaged console table.  Joe is an artisan and a perfectionist.  The furniture came out looking restored and beautiful.   Joe and his wife Rebekka picked up and delivered furniture and were reasonably priced for the incredible work they performed.” -Ilene B., Herndon, VA

“We had a 65 year old bedroom set repaired and refinished. The set consisted of a dresser, chest of drawers, dressing table, two mirrors, and two night stands. The dresser had a split top, and the chest of drawers had a cracked side. Joe fixed the top and side plus numerous small broken items. The original finish was an “orange” maple color in terrible shape. We wanted a cherry finish. Joe striped the old finish and put on a beautiful cherry finish. When we got the furniture back we were pleasantly surprised. The results were as if we had a brand new cherry bedroom set. Joe did an absolutely perfect job. I cannot fully express how pleased we are with Joe and his work, just a beautiful job. The job went perfectly. Very happy with all Joe did.” – Don R., Burke, VA

fahrlingtable “I bought a dining room table that was too long. It had to be cut off at both ends and refinished. They also hand sanded it and put a lacquer finish on it so it would be more protected. Joseph and his wife delivered and assembled it. They were excellent at communicating throughout the process. Joseph is knowledgeable and he is a perfectionist. I would highly recommend Hudson Woodworking & Restoration.” –Joyce F., Annandale, VA

Hexagonal Table B&A

“We are delighted with the refinishing of our hexagonal family room table. The oak table has a rattan (palm wickerwork) shelf so we were concerned about finding a restorer who would maintain the natural grain of the oak surface and work carefully with the delicate rattan. Mr. Hudson was able to match the stain on the wood and rattan surfaces perfectly with the Bruce hardwood “Gunstock” flooring sample we provided and preserved the natural wood graining on the table top. The table looks even better than when we bought it! We promptly sent our kitchen table and chairs to be refinished in the same way. Many thanks Mr. and Mrs. Hudson for the quality and professionalism of your work.” –Carole B. Herndon, VA

“Joe did an excellent repair and refinishing on a new table for me. He and his wife Rebekka were very professional and courteous. I thought my new kitchen table was ruined but Joe refinished it and it looks better and has a better quality finish on it than it did when it was brand new. I have passed his number on to friends of mine and I would certainly use him again if the need arises. Great job…. perfect!”-Brenda S. Bristow, VA

Oak Dining Table & Chairs

“We are repeat customers and very happy with the mending and refinishing on our large round oak table and 4 oak chairs. We would recommend HUDSON WOODWORKING & RESTORATION to anyone considering a new lease of life for their favorite furniture.” –Carole B. Herndon, VA

“Excellent experience from the time I entered Joe Hudson’s shop. These pieces were purchased by my Grandparents early in their marriage and passed to me by my mother so they had tremendous sentimental value but they were darkened and scarred from years of use. The work (Strip, refinish and reupholster 2 harp back chairs, strip and refinish large inlaid wood table with scroll under workings, strip and refinish small mahogany lamp table with scroll side work)was done in less than 3 weeks and the finished pieces exceeded my expectations. I brought fabric to Joe for the 2 harp back chairs and Joe replaced the padding and installed the upholstery beautifully. I have one remaining piece to refinish which is a small kidney shaped dresser that will be headed to Joe in the near future. When you meet Joe, he seems way too young to be “the” guy at the shop but he is as skilled and knowledgeable as they come and a very nice man to do business with. -Carolyn H. Annandale, VA

“Hudson Woodworking repaired and re-finished a couple pieces of furniture and re-finished a couple more. I contacted them to see what there availability was for doing the work. I sent a number of pictures by email and they were able to provide a general estimate. I took the pieces in and they were able to confirm the estimate they provided earlier. When the work was completed I took advantage of the offer to have them deliver the furniture. It did take some going back and forth to arrange the delivery time. Joe takes great pride in his work and so I was happy to use the delivery service since they took additional care in the transport and also came in and setup the pieces. I was well satisfied with the result and they are re-finishing a couple more pieces.” –Ted J. Reston, VA

“I contacted Hudson Woodworking about refinishing my table. Joe returned my call immediately and e-mailed me as well. Everything was explained to me and my questions about the safety of the products used were answered thoroughly. Joe even volunteered to keep the table extra days to let it air out so there would be no residual odor. I waited probably 2 weeks to get other estimates and only one other contractor eventually returned my call. So right away Hudson Woodworking stood out in my mind as the best. We made an appointment and agreed on the price after Joe could see the table in person. The estimate was right in the mid range of the estimate he had given us from our pictures. The estimate with firm price was e-mailed to us before we even got home. The table was finished within 2 weeks. Communication along the way was incredibly prompt. The table is more beautiful now than it was when it was new. The quality of Joe’s work is incredible. Our table is so beautiful that we hesitate to put anything on it. It looks amazing! We will always use Hudson Woodworking for similar projects in the future. You don’t need to look any further for another contractor! Joe Hudson is a very talented woodworker and he and his wife just couldn’t be more nice.”-Ellen N. Haymarket, VA

“Joe Hudson did re-finishing and repairs on some seven pieces of Victorian furniture of mine that had long been in storage and were in very poor shape. Restoring this furniture required exacting work, including replacing wood, fabricating new feet for a secretary, refinishing mottled surfaces on a dining table, fabricating some intricate inlay where the original was gone, and replacing the disintegrating back of a large dresser. The result: these items of this quite old furniture look fine and are ready for use. Dealing with this firm was straightforward and a pleasure. Hudson clearly cares about furniture and it shows in his attention to detail, and knowledge of his craft.” -Art H. Arlington, VA

“The work was excellent. When I took the piece (antique nightstand) to their shop, they worked with me to decide on a new stain color. Mr. Hudson was careful to explain that, since the piece had veneers, there was the possibility that the stripping process would dissolve the glues holding the veneers in place. To try to avoid that, he would hand strip the piece. They promised that it would be completed in 14 days and were right on time, in fact they were a day early in completing the work. The piece is beautiful and the workmanship is outstanding. I would unhesitatingly trust any other furniture to them for repair or refinishing and heartily recommend them to anyone else looking for that service.” –Robert B. Centreville, VA

“I had a broken blanket stand that my father had made for me. It was badly split and I feared that it couldn’t be repaired. Joe is a true artisan. He repaired and refinished the piece so beautifully that I can hardly find the area of the break, and he did it for an extremely reasonable price . I am thrilled with the result. I should also say that both Joe and Rebekka are very professional and kept me informed at every juncture of the process. I’m sure that I will use their services again.” -Kathy M. Vienna, VA

“I have an antique bench (circa 1870). The back leg was broken. It was repaired and the man was very knowledgeable about how the bench was made. He did an excellent job of repairing the bench and cautioned me that because the bench is so fragile we shouldn’t put too much weight on it.They brought all the materials needed and did an excellent job. I was very pleased.” -Kathleen L. Vienna, VA

“Joseph, the owner/woodworker, is very skilled and very familiar with antiques. He listened and delivered exactly what was requested at a reasonable price. He & his wife, partner, picked up and delivered the furniture and were always punctual and professional. Six different pieces of wood furniture were repaired/refinished, 4 of which were antiques. -Vanessa N. Chantilly, VA

“I wanted to have a pencil drawer in a beautiful old desk retrofitted so that it would function as a keyboard drawer. Wasn’t sure if this could be done or where to go. Joe Hudson did an outstanding job in a short amount of time and for a very reasonable price. He is definitely in to refinishing, furniture making and all sorts of woodworking. He reinforced the drawer and did a beautiful job. He guarantees his work and said, “if the drawer doesn’t close properly when you put it back in the desk, let me know and I’ll keep working on it till it’s perfect.” I will definitely use them again.” –Peggy O., Centreville, VA

“I have an (sentimental) rocking chair on which my 4-year old stood, knocked over, and broke the arm rest from the seat. Hudson Woodworking not only reglued the rocking chair, but also restained the seat area to blend over the fracture line. Hudson performed way beyond my expectations–and their estimate! Thank for for restoring my memories!! Great – will use again!” – Karla D. Centreville, VA

“Repairs were needed to three antique wood chairs, including taking them all apart and re-gluing them because they were wobbly, replacing a back support brace on one chair, repairing a cracked leg on one chair, and refinishing 2 chairs. Joe and Rebekka Hudson couldn’t have been easier to work with. They were very responsive and the work that Joe did on the chairs was amazing. I had inherited several pieces of furniture a few months ago after my mother passed away, including three antique wood chairs. Two chairs (a matching set) had been in my mother’s storage room for years. They looked like they had been painted and stripped. They were really dry and the support brace at the bottom of one of them had been broken off. Another chair had a cracked leg that had two nails in it to try to hold it together. Joe had to take each chair apart and re-glue it for stability. He replaced the back brace on one chair, replaced the burl on two chairs and fixed the cracked leg on the other chair. Then he lightly stained and sealed the matching chairs. I couldn’t be happier with the results. You can tell from the results that Joe really loves what he does. It was such a wonderful tribute to my mother that when they delivered the chairs, they left with her armoire, which has at least 3 coats of paint on it. That will be taken apart and re-glued, the paint will be stripped and it will be refinished. And when they’re done with the armoire, I have an antique rocker that needs to be refinished! Wouldn’t take my wood furniture anywhere else.” –Amy L. Vienna, VA
